Poor tree planting methods have become a source of concern to the authorities responsible for forestry activities in Rukungiri district.
James Baguma who is the Assistant Forestry Officer in Rukungiri district says Like any other agri-business, tree planting should be carried out following all the correct steps and methods for positive results.
Some methods include land preparation, early pit digging for setting and aeration, weeding by slashing or spraying to avoid competition, staking, pruning among others.
Baguma is concerned that some farmers have neglected tree spacing which affects the growth of some tree species.
He urged farmers to always seek advice from forestry offices to guide them on specific places for specific tree species depending on the geographical location of the land citing that in Rukungiri district, Nyakishenyi sub county is favorable for Pine (Pinus patra) tree species
